TECO TANK CO. Stand: 1912-2015 History and Information The former Fort St. Joe was the only thing that stayed alive through the 18th century. It was rebuilt into the governmental center and then into the present day city of Key West. At the same time, during the 1960’s, the TECO (Florida Electric Company) tank farm was built on the eastern part of the island to hold water for the resort hotels and roads of the island. The area was once known for its high demand for electricity. When the company sold their power to Florida Power and Light, the lines were moved away from the city. This way, the tank would no longer need to hold water for the resorts. Over the years, the tank farm became a symbol of decay, with unused roads and huge concrete tanks. In 2008, the United States Army Corps of Engineers proposed to remove them. The project, known as “Green Corridor”, would have created a new paved road at the base of the park from 82nd Street to 90th Street. The tanks and roads would have been removed, and the land reclaimed for the adjacent Key West Greenbelt Park. The EPA brought a lawsuit against the Corps, claiming the project would destroy the habitat for several endangered species. The Corps dropped the project on December 31, 2009, for now. They have not started to remove the old infrastructure. The project has caused a change in the park's design, and has done a lot of damage to the old tanks. The park has now been split into three sections. The southern part is the new Key West Greenbelt Park, with the concrete tanks now replaced with ponds. This area has many different plants, and green space. The north part was added to the park in 2005, and is dedicated to the city’s history. It has old stone walls and cannons, as well as the original county courthouse. The third section was the old Fort St. Joe. Now, this is also designated as a green belt park, and has the old roads and tanks left in place. The entire park can be viewed from the Fort and Key West Ferries. References
